Passivation for Liquid-Cooled Data Centers

Why Now

High-density compute changed the metallurgy

Air-cooled halls ran carbon steel chilled water. Liquid-cooled halls add stainless technology cooling loops, coolant distribution units and direct-to-chip circuits carrying high-purity, low-conductivity fluid, because corrosion products in those loops end up at the chip.

That makes surface condition a commissioning issue. Free iron, weld heat tint and fabrication contamination compromise the passive layer stainless depends on, and they surface as water-quality findings at exactly the wrong point in the schedule.

Cleansol has performed this metallurgy work in regulated pharmaceutical and biotech facilities since 2016. The systems are new to the data hall. The work is not new to us.

Scope Honesty

When passivation is required, and when it is not

A vendor that tells you when you do not need a service is a vendor you can put in front of your commissioning authority. Passivation becomes relevant when:

  • The wetted metallurgy is stainless and the specification calls for it
  • Fabrication introduced free iron, embedded iron, weld heat tint or grinding contamination
  • The loop carries high-purity or low-conductivity coolant where corrosion products are unacceptable
  • The equipment manufacturer requires it as a warranty condition
  • An owner or engineer specifies it

And When It Is Not

On a conventional carbon steel chilled water loop, passivation is generally not applicable, and we will tell you so. That loop needs a properly planned flush, which is a different discipline. Send the metallurgy and the spec section, and we will tell you whether passivation is required.

One Project, Two Disciplines

The hydronic side and the hygienic side

Data center cooling splits into two scopes with different rules. Both are delivered by the same organization, the same crews and the same documentation standard, so the mechanical contractor coordinates one subcontractor, not two.

Hydronic side / Cleanhydronics

Flushing, filtration and measured verification

Chilled water and heating water flushing, chemical cleaning, temporary pumping and filtration, live velocity verification, and glycol and heat-transfer-fluid filling when the specification calls for a fluid other than water.

Hygienic side / Cleansol

Passivation and specialty cleaning

Stainless system passivation, high-purity loop cleaning, prefabricated skid and module cleaning, component and equipment cleaning, derouging and remediation.

The Flush Is Not the Finish

Some data center loops are filled with glycol or a specified heat-transfer fluid rather than water. Fluid selection belongs to the engineer, the equipment manufacturer and the fluid manufacturer. Cleanhydronics executes the manufacturer's procedure when a product such as DOWTHERM or THERMINOL is specified: filling, charging, circulating, concentration verification, sampling support and turnover records. Mission-critical commissioning teams ask for the same thing regulated quality teams ask for: the approved procedure, the operating records, the verification results and the deviations, assembled in a package that does not come back with questions.
