On-Site Stainless Steel System Passivation

Cleansol prepares, treats, rinses, verifies and documents stainless steel process systems and equipment in the field, to the project specification.

The Buyer Problem

New stainless is not clean stainless

Fabrication and installation leave free iron, weld heat tint, oils and shop debris on stainless steel surfaces. Left in place, these contaminants compromise the passive layer the metallurgy depends on and raise findings during commissioning and quality review.

Field passivation of an installed system is a different scope from small-part or shop passivation. Circuits, temporary connections, chemistry handling, rinse water and verification all have to be planned around the installed configuration and the project schedule.

When It Is Required

  • The wetted metallurgy is stainless and the specification calls for it
  • Fabrication introduced free iron, embedded iron, weld heat tint or grinding contamination
  • The system carries high-purity or low-conductivity water where corrosion products are unacceptable, including certain technology cooling and direct-to-chip loops
  • The equipment manufacturer requires it as a warranty condition
  • An owner or engineer specifies it, or re-passivation follows derouging or chemical cleaning

And When It Is Not

Passivation is not required on every system. On a conventional carbon steel chilled water loop it is generally not applicable, and we will tell you so. Recommending a service a system does not need costs more than the service is worth.

How the work runs

Pre-cleaning

Oils, debris and fabrication residue are removed so the passivation chemistry reaches the metal surface.

Chemistry selection

Citric or nitric treatment is selected with the customer specification, metallurgy and site conditions in view.

Controlled treatment

Time, temperature and concentration are controlled and recorded through the treatment cycle.

Rinse

The system is rinsed to the criteria defined in the project documents, with rinse water managed on site.

Verification

Surfaces are verified using the test methods the specification calls for, and results are recorded.

Standards and Limits

Procedures reference ASTM A967/A967M, ASTM A380/A380M and ASME BPE as applicable to the customer specification and current technical review. Passivation improves corrosion resistance of a properly prepared surface. It does not prevent all corrosion, and it does not by itself establish regulatory compliance.

Equipment and Temporary Systems

A temporary process system, built for your circuit

Cleansol configures modular pumping, heating, filtration and instrumentation around each circuit. Hygienic pumps, valves and instrumentation are used in the temporary process equipment, and key operating variables can be displayed, monitored and recorded through the treatment cycle.

Verification methods follow the project specification. Depending on the scope, that can include the test methods defined in the referenced standards and the customer quality plan, with results recorded against the acceptance criteria in the project documents.
