Stainless Steel Derouging and Re-Passivation

Rouge, heat tint, scale and staining on operating stainless systems need assessment before chemistry selection. Cleansol identifies what is present, selects the appropriate approach and documents the work.

The Buyer Problem

Not all discoloration is the same, and not all of it responds to the same chemistry

Rouge is iron oxide contamination that migrates through a water system and deposits on wetted stainless surfaces. Heat tint is oxide from welding or thermal processing. Scale is mineral or chemical deposit from the process or service water. Staining can have multiple causes.

Applying the wrong chemistry to the wrong deposit can damage the base metal, drive contamination deeper or leave the underlying problem unresolved. Assessment before chemistry is not optional.

Conditions Addressed

  • Rouge (Class I, II and III, as classification applies to the system)
  • Weld heat tint and post-weld oxidation
  • Mineral and chemical scale from process or service water
  • General surface staining requiring identification before treatment

When It Is Required

  • The operating system shows visible discoloration or rouge deposits at inspection
  • The customer quality plan schedules periodic derouging
  • A system is being returned to service after shutdown or modification
  • Post-construction heat tint from welding must be addressed before commissioning

Assessment First, Chemistry Second

Cleansol does not commit to a derouging chemistry until the deposit type and the metallurgy are confirmed. No single acid system is universally appropriate. The assessment drives the approach, not the other way around.

How a derouging scope runs

Visual and documentary assessment

The deposit type, distribution and severity are documented before chemistry selection. The metallurgy, system configuration and prior maintenance history are reviewed.

Chemistry selection and approval

The derouging approach is selected based on the deposit type and the metallurgy. The customer reviews and approves the proposed chemistry before work begins.

Controlled treatment

Chemistry is applied under controlled conditions with time, temperature and concentration monitored and recorded per the approved procedure.

Rinse and neutralization

The system is rinsed and neutralized to the criteria in the project documents. Waste is characterized and managed per the approved disposal path.

Re-passivation

Following derouging, re-passivation is performed to restore the passive layer on treated surfaces. The passivation scope follows the project specification and the passivation standard as applicable.

Post-treatment verification

Verification testing per the specification is performed after re-passivation and results are recorded. Before and after documentation is assembled where permitted by site conditions and the NDA limits.

Verification testing follows re-passivation, confirming the passive layer is restored. Test methods and acceptance criteria follow the project specification and the applicable passivation standard.
